Sunday Day 7 - re-united with old friends

A lazy day Sunday. Lol! Busy doing nothing!  We wanted to take it easy as we were off to Chichen Itsa first thing on Monday morning.  However, Carolina had arranged for us to visit the Sommelier Martin at the finest in the evening.  

So, 7.45pm, we were escorted across to the finest by Nelson.   Its a short walk, much nearer than I realised, and I was excited to see the lovely Martin, who we had met and spoken to many times in previous years.

Once we walked through the hotel doors, we could appreciate the modern architecture and design of the finest.   There was the usual staircase to a round lit martini bar central to the hotel lobby area.  The furnishings are paired back, comfortable, but stark in comparison to EPM.  However, one of the first things you notice is the noise! The hum drum of children!! Its a bit of a shock to the system seeing so many young people runing around! Im guessing there will be times in the year when it has more of an adults feel, but for the end of july, it was rammed!! Lol! 

Nelson left us in the care of Senor Martin, who had asended the staircase like a gazelle, obviously much practiced daily! It was wonderful to see him, truly.  I had a huge smile on my face as we hugged like old friends.  Its so wonderful to see him back with the excellence group.

Carolina had arranged for us to dine in their only adults only restaurant, Le Petit Plaisir, very similar to food style to Chez at EPM, but the decor is more paired back.  

Before we started a meal we were given a tour of Martins new wine cellar, which takes up a complete wall in the restaurant, a real upgrade from his teeny cupboard in chez! It was wonderful to see him speak about some of the rare wines he now stocks, Martin's obvious passion for wine is inspiring. 





Kevin had bought Martin a little pressie, which is why we wanted to see him, which he gave to him whilst we were in the cellar.  He was really pleased and touched that we'd thought of him.

So, after our tour, we headed back into the restaurant to dine.  Martin had spoken about a lovely argentinian malbec, so we ordered that and a bottle of scrummy prosecco to go with our meal.

I choose duck pate then filet steak.  We shared some rather good cheeses and I finished with a little passion fruit dessert and Kahlua over ice.










At the end of our meal, we had some lovely photos taken with Martin, before heading back to Home.  It was a truly memorable evening and a big big thankyou to Carolina for arranging it.

Chichen Itza and Cenote Review

Seperate to the blog today, I wanted to write a review of our Chichen Itza Trip yesterday - I know a lot ot people ask about going to Chichen Itza on the forum, so thought it might be helpful to peeps planning a Trip in the future.  

Im first of all going to say we had a fantastic, day! In my opinion, it will be a memory Ill cherish forever.  I loved it! 

However, its hot.  Hot, hot, hot. And a long drive 2.45-3hours each way.  

The minivan is air conditioned, but Be prepared for a long drive.

Prior to coming to EPM, we had started to look into a one day private tour, and had lots of differing prices quoted.  Barbara Moger, recommended Liam Dodd to us, and I contacted him a week before our trip via his FB Page

After the initial contact, all discussions were via messenger.

The price quoted was $425 for four people, $485 for six and included

Pick up and drop off at EPM
Private return transfer to chichen Itza
Entrance to Chichen Itza
Entrance to Ik-Kill Cenote
Bi-lingual driver.

We arranged a 7am pick up from the lobby, for six of us, Fiona & Marcus Keeble, Gill & Dave Taylor and myself.  The mini-van could have seated 8 in the back plus two passengers in the front.

You pay for the trip when they pick you up.  Tips are not included and are at your discretion.  

The van was clean and tidy, seats were relatively comfortable.  We spoke to the driver about what we wanted to do, CI and Cenote.  He asked if we wanted to stop at a local town on the way back, but we declined.

As I previously stated, its a long drive, but because we started out so early, we arrived at CI before all the coach crowds, so could walk around and take photos in relatively peace and quiet.

As we arrived our driver asked if we wanted a private tour for approx $56? - we said yes.  There was a little confusion as the group tours are approx $56 but a private tour was $75.  We agreed to the private tour, and boy were we glad we did.  Our guide was A-MAZE-ING!!!  His name is 

Abel Adoney Padilla Ceme

I couldnt recommend him enough.  Abel is an official guide, he has an archaeology degree and was so prepared for our tour.  He provides lots of historical information, backed up by images and slide shows on his a4 size Ipad.  He showed us lots of the best places/angles to take photos, took photos of us, and even gave iphone photography tips to get the best images.  Every one of us loved him, so much that we gave him a tip of $25 ontop of his $75 fee.  We defiantly wouldn't have gotten so much from the trip without him.  Its worth contacting him before your trip to book.

So CI.  IT IS WONDERFUL.  

So steeped in history, such a brilliant display or architecture, culture, and astrological science.  So awe-inspiring to think what was achieved by such an ancient race so many thousands of years ago.







Once the tour is finished, we had approx 1.5hours free time to wander and if anyone wanted to shop at the little stalls selling typical tourist fare.  I never felt pressured to buy anything, so no worries about touts driving you nuts etc.

Theres more to the site than the recognisable pyramid, so we spent a good few hours there.

On our return to the entrance our driver was waiting to take us to the cenote.

Im going to answer cenote questions now as this was the part that had me and Fiona concerned.

Yes there are toilets
Yes there are changing rooms
Yes there are lockers ( $2 fee each) to lock away your bags and valuables howecer theres a sign that says they are not liable for anything stolen, but the lockers aee in full view of the staff and other customers, Im guessing they are very safe.




On arrival at the cenote, we went off to the changing rooms to try spending 10 minutes wriggling a sweaty body into tight lycra.......not easy!! Bring a bikini or tankini to make it easier!

We all locked our bags in the lockers, had our keys securly tied to our wrists, had an ice cold shower!! And headed down LOTS of slippery steps to the cenote.

Now, Im going to be honest, the cenote was beautiful, seriously beautiful.  Lots of hanging vines and an open ceiling.  Proper paradise movie setting, with birds flying overhead. It was gorgeous.

You could get into the pool via a log ladder, or leap from a high up platform.  The leaping was strictly controlled and monitored with children and adults queuing on steps, and the lifeguard issuing instructions and regulating the decents and timing.  It was all very safe.  Lots of people wore life jackets - again you could hire these at the surface.

I was viewing the ladder option in and out, when I noticed Kevin half way up the queue to jump in.  I literally had my heart in my mouth and was praying the whole time he didnt have a heart attack!!! (He looked to be the oldest person in the queue...........🙀🙀🙀🙀)

No fears at all! I shouldnt have worried.  No jumping in, bombing etc for him! He did the nost beautufjl dive ever, proper hands in front of him, clan cut through the water! i gasped and the whole cenote of people cheered!!! Never been so proud lol! Then he went off and did it again from the slighly higher platform! He actually had people congratulate him when he got out lol! 

So, did I go in? No.  I chicken shitted out.  Not because of the water, fishes, cave etc, bit because of the get out ladders.  Im a big girl, with almost zero upper body strength, and I thought, ' youre never going to get out of there love' so made my mind up in two minutes.  Do I regret it? Nope.  Still loved every minute of it.  But beware, its not for the unfit as its a long way down, and even longer coming up!

After we showered off and changed back into our civvies, we had a can of beer each at the small bar.  Six cans were $18.  Then decided to head straight back to EPM, rather than sample the delights of the all you can eat cenote buffet $10 each.




A long journey home saw us finish at the sports bar, margaritas, beers and wine, plus burgers, onion rings etc downed like ravenous beasts!! Lol!




So, things to note if you are planning a trip

Leave as early as you dare to avoid the crowds!

Bring with you....

Hats
Suncream
Tissues
Moskitto spray got bit loads in the cenote!
Antibacterial wipes or gel for your hands
Beach towels
Cameras (kev left his go pro in the safe!)
Money
Kindle or reading material for the journey
Umbrella from your room, good for rain or the sun
Snacks or fruit etc - crisps, not chocolate unless you put it in the ice box
Water - bring double what you think - we drank six bottles between us

Put your water and the chocolate etc in the provided ice box - unlike me who carried it around with me all day and literlally could have poured the snickers bar into my mouth like syrup!!

Saturday Day 6 - Beach and Toscana

Another fun packed day! We headed off to the beach around 9am - there were lots of beds to choise from at that time, no problem! We choise two sets on the back row, wood beds with thich cushions, set up before popping to the Lobster house for a quick breakfast.  

Once back at the beach, Marcus and Fiona decided to investigate the water sports.  They were able to borrow paddle boards, canoes and snorkels by free by just giving their room number as security.  Jet skis were quoted at $70 per half hour - they asked about a deal for three as Kevin and Dale also want to go out and were quoted $50 each for 30 mins - pretty good!





The EPM beach was looking pretty clear of seaweed yesterday, and the water was warm.  I kept covered with a light Kimono as my back was a bit tender from the sun.  We spent plenty of time in and out of the sea, and I did enjoy it even though its not my favourite spot - I really dont like the sand! Lol!







Another long lazy lunch at the Grill with the Bradleys, when Kevin spotted Maria, who we had lunch with two years ago! She and her friend had just arrived! Hugs all around! Shes staying for two weeks so hope to catch up with her!

After lunch we went back to the beach until 4pm.  Hard life..........












After a rest in our room, we headed to the martini bar, where we were the first to arrive! Ha Bradleys! We're not always late!!!




A glass of wine, and a chat and along came Nelson.  We talked for a while about Mexico city and one of our favourite artists Frida Kahlo.  Nelson had me quite envious as he had been to her house in Mexico city which is now a museum.  Heres the iconic Frida looking wonderful!


Deffo need to go to Mexico City with Nelson! Trying to persuade him to come stay with us England, promised him tea at the Dorchester and a tour of London hotspots! We'll see! 😉😉😉

Dinner last night was in Toscana, which has had a bit of a facelift with new chairs.  Honest opinion from our group was that it seemed like a canteen and that the elegant atmosphere has changed.  Hey ho!

Dinner was fun, good food - my double portion of duck ravioli went down a treat! And I finished with some amazing ice cream and lemoncillo - spoilt!












I noticed how beautiful the resort is at night.  Another great day xx

Friday - Day 5 Wine Celler and Rock n'Burger!

Two more different dining experiences in one day today!!! For lunch we headed down to Los Olas for my favourite hour on the beach 'Rock n' burger' where a live band sets up and plays classic rock music.  Seriously, it doesnt get much better than sitting, sipping a cold one, listening to music everyone knows, and gazing out on a turquoise blue ocean.  Heaven!! And the foods good too! Bugers fries and all the trimmings!great way to break up the day and once again Alan worked his socks off keeping all the guests happy.  Bliss!








This evening was in complete contrast.  We had booked the private dining room at chez - The wine cellar.  For those that havent been before, its a glass room, inside the french restaurant Chez.  A private dining experience can be booked here, the cost is a minimum spend of $100 per couple on wine. (Not a problem for us!)  The sommelier will discuss your wine preferences with you and help you choose a wine to your liking.  The menu is the same menu as chez.  Id advise booking well in advance as its very very popular.  Its a lovely experience and I can definatly recommend if you have a special occasion to celebrate whilst at EPM.

With Raul's help, We choose a delicious crisp white reisling and two bottles of the wonderful Icaro red. Perfect pairings with our meal.






For dinner, I choose the pear and blue cheese salad, the filet mignon and the cheese platter.  Really good food, beatifully presented.







After dinner we retired to the martini bar for a quick nightcap.  Another lovely day.
